Minecraft's console versions have now outsold Minecraft on PC, Mac

Minecraft's console editions for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have now sold more copies than the game's original PC and Mac version.

The latest tally of total Minecraft sales stands around the 54m mark, developer Mojang's Patrick Geuder revealed via Twitter yesterday. That includes PC and console editions, as well as copies of the mobile version for iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

And that's without the influx of extra sales due this summer with the launch of Minecraft for PlayStation 4, Vita and Xbox One. These new versions will arrive sometime in August with upgrade options for owners of the game on an earlier format.

Week after week, Minecraft's console versions remain in the UK chart top 10 - and that's just based on physical copies sold rather than downloads.

First released in 2009, Minecraft earned Mojang £200m last year, while creator Markus "Notch" Persson pocketed £77m in licensing fees.
