In Reverse: 1999, the auto battle works by allowing you to replay battles that you have already completed, this is a great if you are stuck somewhere and need more resources to level up and make progress, you can just activate the Auto Battle and grind some rewards, here's how.

Select the stage that you would like to Auto Battle, it must be one that you have already completed, and hit the replay option, instead of the start button. You'll then have the option to select how many times you want to auto battle that level, so select your number and hit the replay button. The battle will play out, and you'll get your rewards based on the multiplier that you used.

Remember that auto battle does still consume stamina, so when selecting your multiplier bear this in mind. Auto Battle is a great way to run down stamina if you know you will be away from the game for a while, so you can auto battle, then come back when your stamina has regenerated.
